03 — The record
The record
The women already do the recovery and the grading. What has never existed is a record that the work happened. That record is what makes the material saleable, and it is the thing this enterprise is actually building.
Why the record is the product
The material is not scarce. Neither is the labour, nor the skill, nor the knowledge of where the stockpiles are and what is in them. All of that already exists in this county and has for years.
What does not exist is evidence. An industrial buyer cannot purchase material it cannot account for, because its own permits, audits and customers depend on being able to show where its inputs came from. A bank cannot assess a producer with no history. A woman cannot be paid for consistency she cannot demonstrate. In each case the constraint is not the material. It is that nothing records it.
So the proposition is narrow and, we think, correct: a documented operation is worth more than an undocumented one, doing identical physical work. The record is not overhead on the business. It is the part that creates the value.
What is captured, and when
Seven things, at the moment a lot is closed, in the field rather than afterwards in an office.
- Weight, read from the scale in the presence of the woman who recovered the material.
- Grade, the size fraction and assessed composition, from the grader who handled it.
- Moisture, the condition at the point of weighing.
- Photograph of the material and the filled, tagged lot.
- Coordinates of the recovery, rather than the name of a general area.
- Handler, by name, which is what makes payment and quality attributable.
- Timestamp, from the device rather than from recollection.
Nothing in that list is retyped later. A delivery note does not restate a weight, it points at the lot. A correction is recorded as a correction, with its reason, alongside the original figure rather than in place of it.
That last rule is the one that carries the most weight, and it is not primarily about audit. Every woman associated with the enterprise has to believe the recorded figure is the one she saw at the scale. A single unexplained adjustment ends that belief permanently, and she is free to walk back to the roadside.

What travels with a consignment
An evidence pack is the bundle a buyer’s compliance function reviews. Its contents cluster into four groups: identity and origin, right to the material, characterisation, and chain and handling. The evidence pack is assembled from lot records. It is not written for the buyer at the point of sale, because a record produced after the fact demonstrates only that somebody produced it after the fact.
The tooling
Traceability and operations infrastructure for the enterprise is built by Lolwe AI Ltd in Kisumu. It has to work on a phone, in rain, with dirty hands and no signal, and reconcile when a signal returns, because a system that assumes otherwise gets filled in later and returns you to the reconstruction it was meant to replace.
That is the whole of what we will say about the technology. It is infrastructure, in the sense that a road is infrastructure. The proposition of this enterprise is the record and the material, not the software that captures them.
What the record does not yet show
We do not have a continuous documented operating history. Records kept from the current period forward accumulate into one; they cannot be assembled retrospectively, and we will not attempt it.
Our active workforce count is not verified from records. Our lawful basis for access, recovery and dealing is not yet documented in a form a buyer could review. Those gaps, and the rest, are listed with the work that would close them on what we cannot yet show.
